Physical Education at St. Mary’s 2022/2023
Intent Statement
Through the study of PE, St Mary's children will understand the importance of healthy living, fitness and know how their bodies work. They will also learn the value of teamwork and develop collaboration skills alongside positive decision making.
Rationale and our learning sequence
The National Curriculum for England states the following:
“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”
At St. Mary’s we have developed our PE Curriculum to ensure that at all stages of their learning journey our children are equipped with the following skills:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity thus kick starting healthy active lifestyles
- the profile of PE and Sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
Primary PE & Sports Premium Overview
The Government is providing funding for a third academic year to enhance the availability and quality of PE and Sports provision. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – and will see money going directly to Primary Schools to spend on improving the quality of physical education and sport for all school pupils. The funding is ring-fenced with the school able to choose how it is spent in accordance to the identification of specific interests and needs. Accountability for the grant aid rests with all primary schools with the added responsibility of reporting online both spend and impact so that the wider community is able to assess performance levels of regional primary teaching establishments. At St. Mary’s we aim to ensure that the Primary PE & Sports Premium funding is allocated to high quality, sustainable initiatives that address the following key areas:
- Staff professional development including Subject Leader Management and the development of specific skills
- Raised participation levels within curricular and extra-curricular activities including intra & inter competition for all groups of pupils irrespective of their gender, race, ability level or socio-economic circumstance
- Improved knowledge; skills and understanding of the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle
Increased learning opportunities associated with healthy diet and nutrition
This learning is supported by enrichment activities including educational visits such as Forest School where children from all year groups engage in outdoor adventurous activities. Participation in a range of competitive tournaments for children in Key Stage 2 at both a borough, county and national level. A wide range of extra-curricular activities available for all year groups from Multi Sports for EYFS to martial arts, Irish Dancing and football for our older children; a number of these activities are offered free of charge to parents. Our PE curriculum overview tracks the sequence of learning for our children and seeks to build on prior learning at all stages of the learning journey offering a wide range of different opportunities so that children are able to refer to prior learning experiences when accessing new learning and deepening skills and understanding over time.
