Design and Technology at St. Mary’s 2022/2023
Intent Statement
Through the study of Design and Technology, St. Mary’s children will use creativity and imagination to solve real and relevant problems enabling them to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
Rationale and our learning sequence
The National Curriculum for England states the following:
“Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.”
At St. Mary’s we have developed our Design and Technology Curriculum to ensure that at all stages of their learning journey our children are equipped with skills in order to:
- Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to confidently participate in our technology-based world.
- Develop breadth and depth of knowledge, skills and understanding in order to design, make and evaluate products for a range of users and purposes.
- Be able to critique, evaluate and adapt their work and that of others.
- Through the study of food technology to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
This learning is supported by embedding the Projects on a Page learning schemes devised by DATA - The Design and Technology Association. Our curriculum map tracks the sequence of learning for our children and seeks to build on prior learning at all stages of the learning journey. Children are able to refer to prior learning experiences when accessing new learning and deepen their skills and understanding over time.
